Clinical Description
Eden House is a community for individuals in recovery from being trafficked, engaged in sex work, and, in most cases, drug addiction. The mission of Eden House is to provide sanctuary along with an array of support services for victims of human trafficking who have a significant history of prostitution and chemical dependency. Providing case management and creating a therapeutic milieu both aim to give each resident the tools to leave Eden House as a self-sufficient individual, grounded in active recovery and an aspirational knowledge of how to live a purposeful and value-based life.
Eden House’s program is based on the concept of holistic case management within a therapeutic milieu. As case managers, staff works with residents to create individualized treatment plans consisting of goals and objectives that address all aspects of their journey to recovery. The implementation of this plan involves connecting residents to various external partners who provide such services as intensive outpatient substance abuse counseling, trauma-focused therapy, participation in 12-step programs, psychiatric evaluation and medication management, primary and specialty health care, public benefit programs, educational assistance, job skill development and job search, and financial management.
More importantly, staff works to develop the therapeutic aspects of the program. This work occurs on a daily basis for the residents. Staff has the opportunity to observe resident behavior and intervene in the moment to address multiple issues such as anger, negative thought patterns, impulsiveness, triggers that arouse past feelings, dishonesty, and other behaviors that are associated both with trauma and with substance use. Providing case management and creating a therapeutic milieu both aim to give each resident the tools to leave Eden House as an independent woman, grounded in active recovery and in an aspirational knowledge of how to live a purposeful and value-based life.
